"The first man behind him charged his weapon, switched off the safety and was about to fire, when one of the Screamers moved to protect two smaller ones, held up a hand, as if to fend off the inevitable and, to the astonishment of the humans, spoke, begging, 'Please…no. We are not bad. Please don’t shoot! We’re not animals,' bowing its head in submission, the other three following suit.
It had spoken perfect English, though in a hoarse, subdued voice.
'Hold up!' Ewan held up his hand to keep the rest of the men from firing on the hapless creatures, but kept his weapon trained on them.
For a full minute, the hunters were still, eyes wide in astonishment; the only sound, the wind blowing across an exhaust vent in the ceiling and barely audible sobbing from the unmoving creature that had just spoken. It had tears in its eyes, trying to stay between the smallest one and the humans.
Ewan was the first to utter a sound, 'Who…who…what are you? Wait…You’re Screamers! Screamers don’t talk! We’ve killed hundreds of you…and only get screams or growling. Who…what the h*** are you?'
The creature replied, 'We don’t know…We don’t know. Please…please, don’t hurt us.'"
