There is nothing to spend a lot on this, one of the plugins used in the site may have some loopholes that have been exploited, were any free/nulled plugins used from unknown authors? Mostly a plugin such a Wp fence , bullet proof security can be installed to check the files and notify issues and keep a backup to restore.
