I have a client who wants me to put together a few POS stations for a bar that is being constructed in my area. He needs me to purchase 5 touch screen monitors along with 5 desktops. I have the desktops running XP and windows 7.. If it's easier it can even be handled in a web browser as I can create a local server or it can be hosted on a site.
He wants to be able to take an order, keep an active bar tabs, print to a receipt printer and have it control the cash drawer opening on each transaction, process credit card transactions. This place will serve food as well as beverages so if a customer purchases a beer and a burger, a receipt needs to be printed to the kitchen. It is important for the owner to be able to control the inventory shown on the screen (such as bottles, draft, wine, hard liquor) as well as control the pricing from the back end. If the customer wants to buy a burger, the software should allow the user to make notes such as add cheese (for a fee if the owner wants to charge), pickles, lettuce, etc. There would be a few other possible features not mentioned (for example free pour which allows the bar tender to pour a free drink for a customer). I have seen open source projects such as openbravo and don't care if it is built from an open source project such as that but it just needs to be easy for the bartenders to use, the owner to access backend information (reporting, price changes, keep inventory) and all the data should be stored on a local server, not one of the terminals at the bar/restaurant/kitchen area.
