Background information

The VE is needed to test a hypothesis that: Users interacting within a VE that contains several landmarks will perform better at navigational tasks than users who interact within a VE that has fewer landmarks. The users will be divided into four groups. Two groups will navigate the VE using maps with fewer landmarks (map 1) to accomplish the task. Two other groups will navigate the VE using maps that contain more landmarks that are placed along the most efficient route to the accomplish the task (map 2)

The main part of the project is:

Modification of the game engine HalfLife to make it suitable for measuring a player’s ability to navigate and perform tasks on that map. This should include input of the subjects ID number, a recording of the time taken for the task to navigate from one point to another on the map and also the distance covered by the player.

Deliverables

A modification of the game engine to make it suitable for measuring a player’s ability to navigate and perform tasks on the map, I.e. a programme that allows identification and recording of the time taksn for the task for each individual user ans navigation of the map and the distance covered by the player. This information should be recorded in a log so that performance of users can be compared.
