Winglet Media specialise in Online Interactive Training for airline pilots and are currently developing a Flight Management Guidance Computer solution.
The objective of this project is to derive a mathematical formula for determination of navigation waypoints whose position is computed as a relative position from other waypoints of known position.
Formulae are already published for Great Circle bearing and distance computations, and the software makes extensive use of Ed William’s aviation formulary.
The required formula is for accurate determination of the position of ‘FD’ type ‘path terminator waypoints’ - see attached document "Path Terminator Waypoints Calculations Requirements". The inputs given for this are:
• ANY two known positions (a FIX and a NAVAID)
• a track (i.e. a magnetic bearing) over the ground from the FIX
• a specified distance in nautical miles from another the NAVAID
The required output is a latitude/longitude in radians or degrees at the intersection of the track from the fix and the distance from the navaid.
