Winner of a R&D Challenge on Plants Genetics using Optimization Methods

IdeaConnection
2016
The goal of this challenge was to determine the influence of specific genes and epistatic effects, given the genetic makeup of plants and their phenotype, by means of optimization methods (see https://www.ideaconnection.com/challenge-winners/)

Optimal 3D layout of industrial facilities

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00207540110118622
Facilities layout is concerned with the spatial arrangement of a set of departments or equipment items. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation, for the optimal layout of facilities within a two-dimensional (2D) continuous space has been developed (Barbosa-Póvoa et al . 2001). In this paper, the proposed model is extended to account for the location of equipment units within a 3D multi-floor continuous space.

Optimal Design and Layout of Industrial Facilities

http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ie010661k
A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation for the optimal design and layout of generic industrial facilities was proposed in part I of this work (see preceding paper). The applicability of the model is explored in this paper, through a study of the simultaneous design and layout of a batch multipurpose plants. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear problem (MILP) in which binary variables are introduced to characterize operational and topological choices.

Optimization of the Facility Layout Problem

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/311986268_Optimisation_of_the_Facility_Layout_Problem
The optimisation of industrial layout problems is addressed to take account for the economic importance and complexity inherent in such problems. A generic mathematical model for the Facility Layout Problem (FLP) is presented based on a rectilinear distance representation. All optimisation models are formulated as Mixed Integer Linear Problem (MILP) problems, which are solved through the use of a standard branch and bound (B&B) optimisation package (CPLEX ®).

Sustainable water management by reducing water losses

http://prezi.com/upocz5qgxvwo/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share
Several economic and environmental sustainable strategies and practices are presented showing how major Portuguese water supply utilities are controlling and reducing their water losses.

Conflict solving and management support guide

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/266672359_Conflict_solving_and_management_support_guide
This report covers scenario building methods and techniques that involves conflict solving through multi-criteria identification, assessment and management of conflicts between actors, with respect to the conflict analysis and management and the procedure to determine conflict indices and further feedback phase to improve actions and reduce them.

Demystifying Economic Valuation

http://valuing-nature.net/demystifying-economic-valuation-paper
This paper covers the main issues, questions and principles surrounding economic valuation and is designed as an overview for those new to economic valuation. The paper provides a summary of agreed principles to help communication with other Valuing Nature research disciplines and users of economic value evidence, including: - What is economic valuation? - How do we estimate it? - Whose values count? - How do we use economic values in decision making? - How to communicate its evidence?

Multicriteria decision analysis: High-speed railway station

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0377221707003803
The goal for the study was to compare alternative siting strategies, defined by the Portuguese high-speed railway authority. These strategies were materialized in a set of location alternatives, which were evaluated from a range of technical, economical, social and environmental criteria. This paper describes the multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach by which the best alternative was identified from the given set of possible alternatives.

Full disclosure of tender evaluation models in public procurement

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1478409210000269
Public procurement rules in the European Union require that public contracting authorities must publish all tender evaluation criteria and its weights in advance. In order to define sound weights, the authors argue that the scoring rules for all evaluation criteria must be defined beforehand. This paper presents the Portuguese Public Contracts Code, outlines the feasibility of establishing such a model in advance, addresses detailed instructions on how to go about in developing and applying it.

Supporting multicriteria group decisions

http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10726-016-9501-y
Decisions on sustainable development issues usually involve multiple stakeholders with multiple and often conflicting perspectives. Participatory processes along with sound multicriteria analysis tools and models for cooperative group decision-making can support stakeholders to select the best actions. This article presents a real-world application of the MACBETH socio-technical approach for the sustainable redevelopment of a brownfield.
