Magento: Design a better 404 page & help me solve not found errors in gogle webmaster

Hi,
We have a magento website with responsive template. so need a customised 404 page which is responsive as well.
we have seen plenty of free templates online but we need a better one. which is google friendly and good for SEO.
2nd in our google webmaster tool there are 47,650 "not found" errors, they are not 404 errors so we are confused what is going wrong and where. we have total 199,020 pages in our site map. due to this issue google is not indexing our site pages more then 19,000 which is very low and our ranking in google is getting effeted.
we need deep checking of our site and then resolve the issue.
