Build an Online Store

I spent a couple thousand 12 years ago to get this site built, but it never got done, and has just been in 'storage' since then while I have focused on other things. I'd like to try again on it now. You can use the original as a guideline for what I am looking for, but obviously we will need to start over from scratch on a new platform that is mobile friendly and responsive. My initial idea was to create a mini ebay style site for only original art where users could buy and sell new and used art. Images and photos that show off the art will be important, and the site should be very simple and easy to use, clean and uncluttered so that the art itself will be the star, displayed gallery style. The site will need to allow for easy ecommerce transactions between users, and also an escrow service for those who wish to use it for larger sales. There should also be some sort of messaging system, rating system, and of course the ability for me to easily and fully manage the site and the users. There will be a standard listing for free, and a featured listing with a fee. All listings will expire after a month and then will need to be renewed manually. Payment should be able to pass from one user to another for standard transactions in which escrow is not requested. Looking for something that can easily scale to accomodate a large number of users. Open to suggestions for the best way to do it. Looking for someone with experience and a proven track record who can get the job done well, and do work on both the front end, back end, and mobile side of things. I want a site that will become the number one place for people looking to buy or sell new & used original art online to go. There is a lot of competition out there for 'art' sites, so this needs to stand out from the crowd and deliver an outstanding user experience in every way. I want to be even better than ebay, although on a much smaller scale and with a niche focus of only original art, both new and used. The site will eventually have thousands of users, both sellers and buyers, and each seller will need to have their own 'gallery' (page showing all their offerings) within the site to display all the work they have for sale. Sellers will be either individuals/artists selling their own or others works, or galleries/dealers selling others works. Allowing users to communicate with one another and buy/sell from/to one another will create its own set of complications so I will need a way to manage all those issues. I'm wondering what sort of platform you believe would work best for this type of a site and why, and what other sites you have completed that might compare. Thanks
