Make changes to my wordpress page template

I have a website with a custom page template. The custom page template displays a list of custom post types. I need you to add a field to the custom post type entry and edit pages and then display the list of custom post types filtered for the new field that is added.
I will need you to show me how you made the changes and explain what each line of code does.
