Trees and psychological well being
Emotional and mental well being:
O’Brien’s (2004, 2005) work on the ways in which people value trees and emphasizes that while the physical exercise people undertake as part of their use of woodlands is important, it is often the emotional and mental well-being that has the greatest impact in terms of reducing people’s stress.
Stress:
Ulrich et al.’s (1991) work on stress recovery during exposure to natural and urban environments found that ‘Short duration nature exposures might have an important function for many urbanites in facilitating recovery from such stressors as daily hassles or annoyances.
Increased concentrating power:
People who take a walk in green environment have better concentrating power afterwards than those who practice relaxation techniques indoors.
Workers efficiency:
Views of nature assist the workers at the workplace. Employees with views of nature report 15% fewer illnesses and feel more enthusiastic and less frustrated than those without a nature view outside.
Hospitalized patients:
Hospitalized patients recovering from surgery who had a view of a grove of trees through their windows required fewer pain relievers and left the hospital a day sooner than similar patients who had a view of a brick wall.
Anxiety:
Those who commute along tree lined roads remain calmer, anxiety free and have low blood pressure and drive less aggressively than those who drive along roads havi
