Most bosses believe in working backwards, when it comes to performance rewards. They care more about office politics, try to reward those whom they know better, with whom they are more comfortable etc., rather than performance.
Everyone should be paid equally for doing equal work. Pay should not depend on how long you work somewhere but rather about the results you produce on any given day. If we all got paid, based on how long we worked somewhere, we would all get lazier by the day, and the longer we are at a company, the company as a whole, would get fat and lazy, which in turn, would get surpassed by a skinnier, more agile competitor. In order for a company to stay competitive for the long haul, their team has to stay hungry and competitive. The only way to achieve that is to allow the employees to get paid on the basis of their results and not by the number of hours they spend at their desks.
Results, like money, have no soul. In most cases (of course there are always exceptions to every rule)...
