i am brand new to mac automator. this is what i want to automate.
i get orders for printing with attached links for customer-uploaded .PDF files that i need to rename based on the paper/size/qty/etc. I need to basically create a part number and save the file as such. it's a pain.
i want to select or copy the order number (text) of the open order (ex. "44444"), have a folder created that is named by the order number ("44444"). next i want to click each download link and type the name ("1A" for example) and have it automatically save in the folder i just created (folder="44444"). when i save the file and it automatically saves into the folder i want a prefix of the order number ("44444") added to the beginning of each filename and also "_PAPER_SIZE_QTY" added to after the filename "1A".
so after the action is finished i want a folder and filename like so:
even better if i can be prompted when i save the folder to add variable values for "PAPER" and "QTY" and have those automatically populated in the filename.
1) select order number on website (text)
2) run script/service that will create & name a folder from the selected/copied text (ex. "45947")
3) make new folder the default downloads folder for safari
4) all new downloads will go into new folder until script/service is run for a new #
4) any files saved into the NEW default download file will have the name of the folder (45947 or whatever the order number was) added as a prefix_ to the saved file name entered at the download/save prompt.
5) in same action or a new action add suffix of "PAPER_SIZE_QTY"
I have other actions i need but i need to start here. The name would then be changed based on other variable (Paper/size/qty) with find & replace.
well I am a programmer .. I have never worked with mac automator before but I googled it and I have a pretty idea about what I need to do to achieve what you require. setting the downloads default folder directly isn't the best idea in my opinion .. it's easier to check downloads folder for any new files constantly and move them to the new folder created by the script (renaming them at the same time too).
