Design SQL Communication

Many users of my application complain because certain WiFi locations routers (Wayport) block port 1434 UDP. I need a design to get around this blockage. The design project might also be called an "advice" project. The solution just needs to be answered in a page long document that explains the best work-around for this. The solutions could include using a proxy, create an XML web service and quit letting your users directly access the data. Other solutions? Help me brainstorm this solution. Have you already solved this type of situation in the past? Give me your experience.
