It is somewhere one can easily forget about the rigors of a daily grind and truly get away from it all.
The upper peninsula is beautiful throughout all seasons. Beginning in September, the leaves change their hues to a brilliant display of yellows, oranges, and reds. Hunting season also offers an abundance of game and rental cabins can be very inexpensive. Skiing and winter sports can also be found in the U.P. along with a multitude of snow mobile trails during the winter season. Spring offers the awakening of the forests where at the same time one can still look out at the ice floes on Lake Superior. Summer shows blooms in all their glory along with berry picking and hiking.
One of the best things about the upper peninsula of Michigan is that one can travel in all four directions and find a connection with the outdoors and nature. Marquette, Michigan, is the biggest city in the U.P. and offers some shopping and civilization as do Houghton and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. However, one does not travel to the upper peninsula of Michigan to shop in boutiques.
Since the U.P. is large, one can hike a trail and will probably run into more wildlife than people. Black bear roam the forests as do moose and deer and a wide variety of small critters. A wide variety of birds also flock to the
