At a basic level, the easiest way to tell if an AI program is accurate is to simply test it out. Pick a topic you know a lot about and pose it a hypothetical situation.

At a more advanced level, the accuracy of the AI software you are working with will depend on two things. One is the robustness of the large language model (LLM) that it uses, and the other is the skill in which the software prompts your inquiries. The first part is fixed based on the models used, and the second is based on the skill of the programmers.

For example, say you want AI to tell you all the legal defenses available for a particular factual situation/claim. You can go to AI and ask it to give you defenses. If the model is advanced, it will probably give you good responses. If the software you use is honed by a skilled litigator specifically to provide you legal defenses, the response you get will be broader, more thorough, and likely designed to be used with a live case (versus theoretical/academic).

The challenges associated with these two things limit any particular legal AI software provider. You need technical skills and legal skills for it to be the most effective. For example, it's easier to ask AI to compare two contract provisions that already exist in a document than it is to ask it to draft discovery objections from scratch. The former requires software to compare two paragraphs without much legal skill, whereas the latter requires specific litigation ability to draft a document in a way that is usable by a practicing litigator.

The accuracy of AI is ultimately as good as the data and the programmers involved in the software creation. For example, ai.law was honed by the skills developed over thousands of case matters in the real world with real clients. That doesn't mean it is perfect, but you can appreciate its accuracy (and the relevancy of its answers) will be much higher than if someone sat down and tried to replicate their work with a series of chats using ChatGPT.
