Energy Resources in the UK: A Critical Assessment and Analysis Background The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 placed an obligation on countries to reduce carbon emissions within a given time frame (2008-2012). The Paris Agreement has 196 countries pledging to limit climate change to 2C above pre-industrial levels. The UK has had strong policy responses to these global issues. In addition, the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (2000) stated a need to achieve a 60% reduction by the middle of the century; this was adopted as the formal UK target in the Energy White Paper: Our Energy Future (2003), and re-stated in the Energy White Paper (May 2007). The target in the Climate Change Act (2008) is now an 80% reduction by 2050. The Report and the Task In your report you shall: • Give an overview of various renewable and non-renewable energy resources and their availability in the UK. • This should include a comparative analysis of advantages and disadvantages of various renewable and non-renewable energy resources. i.e. explain the reasons behind the UK’s current energy mix. The report shall be academically sound with in depth analysis addressing various points and issues those have been asked. It shall be well structured, fully and properly referenced document. The total document length, including all text in titles, figures, tables, and appendices shall not exceed 2000 words. (References not included in word count) It shall have an introduction, aims and objective, literature review, analysis and conclusions, the exact structure is up to you. Methodology There is a significant amount of material on the web on all of these schemes. Good starting points are government sites – BEIS, DEFRA, HMRC – but there are a number of private sector organisations who also give information such as BP. In the renewable energy technology section, there are various textbooks available as a reference which has been explained during the lectures. You are also particularly encouraged to use the scientific journals, dissertations to supports your analysis and argument. 1 ERUA Level 7 Assignment 2018/2019 You will need to be organised and discriminating in the collection of relevant literatures. This means starting early, as there is a lot to reading involved! The assessment is staged, with the first part showing the literature you have collected (as a list of references), and an outline structure of the final report. This helps you to organise your work and structure your approach. Much of this material is covered in the lecture programme, but you will need to research the subjects in greater detail in order to explain the details of how each scheme operates. Where historical evidence exists of how the schemes have faired in practice you will need to present this.
