I'm a professional South African proofreader currently based in Guatemala and I work in both US and UK English. My work is thorough, since I don't simply rely on proofreading software to point out mistakes: I use my 'proofreading eye' (which is not the same as a normal reading eye; proper proofreading requires a special reading technique) and I engage with the text. Moreover, I look at the lay-out and the use of artwork too as part of the proofreading process. I'd be happy to work in MS Word but would like to suggest that you send the pages as a writable pdf since this makes it possible to retain the original lay-out and I can just mark up the changes exactly where they should go.
