Melville, Moby Dick, Chapter 55 “Of the Monstrous Pictures of Whales” through Chapter 91 “The Pequod Meets the Rose-Bud”
Detail instruction:
I was really intrigued by Chapter 88 "Fast-Fish and Loose-Fish". Melville offers the definition of these two terms as: "I. A Fast-Fish belongs to the party fast to it. II. A Loose-Fish is fair game for anybody who can soonest catch it" (308). Although the majority of the chapter is, of course, devoted to these terms as they relate to the whaling industry, the chapter turns to other legal, historical, political examples.
What I'd like you to do in your response is point to another example in the book of where you see the *idea* of a fast-fish or loose-fish at work. And also can you think of an example either in your personal experience, perhaps in current events, or a different historical example than those offered in the novel? Why do you think these terms might be useful? And finally -- how do you see them in relation to the American identity? How do you think we as a culture view "Fast-Fish" or "Loose-Fish"?
