The project consists of an application and a web interface.
**Application**
This is a commercial backups application that is cross-platform that runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux (command-line only). It runs as a service and slowly syncs data in the background so as not to saturate the connection of the end user. The application can run automatically or manually. The end user simply selects folders to be backed up and the application begins syncing data with the SAN on our network, over a secure protocol such as rsync over SSH. The SAN will be running Linux. The application authenticates using a username and password received after payment is made through the website. Files can be restored from within the application.
There are three methods for restoring files: A complete restoration, the download of individual files, and a DVD Delivery request. Any of these restoration methods may be selected from within the Application and they are billed using the credit card on file.
**Web Interface**
Web access to files, an AJAX "Web 2.0" type directory structure that looks like Windows Explorer or Finder. Designed for quick access to files and the ability to download individual files. Password protected, tied to the account and billed for downloads.
Account Preferences, billing options, and upgrades are also available on the site. Credit cards are processed automatically through Authorize.net.
**Other Notes**
Files would be compressed on the server and decompressed when a restoration is requested. Server Admin will handle all aspects of SAN management but there will need to be some coordination regarding compression and decompression for delivery.
