I have plenty of experience of AWS, having used EC2 servers for development and running live sites. I also routinely use S3 storage as a low cost convenient off site backup. I have always managed to configure my servers so that cost is minimised, and it strikes me that there must be something seriously wrong with your setup. You should be able to stream 1GB for less than a dollar.
