Regarding the verification email: User is put in the DB (.mdb) and if the email is not verificated within 48 hours, the user must be deleted. Another solution in my admin back-site I have a function where I can transfer all new users to a "project" database, and if email is not verificated user will not be transfered to this DB. Regarding design: I dont expect the site to be exactly like [login to view URL] but to look a bit like it so I have the same graphic profile in both sites.
