Our product is a stand-alone J2SE Java application designed to help English speakers learn Chinese. Our goal is to create a simplified J2ME version of the application for Palm OS. The Palm version will incorporate some, but not all, of the features of the desktop version of the program. Our hope, of course, is that much of the Java source code for the existing program can be re-used for the Palm version. The project will proceed in several phases. The first phase will be to create a Palm version of a Java applet that is currently available on our website. This applet is a flashcard program for students of Chinese. It displays Chinese characters, and requires the user to guess the correct pronunciation and meaning of each character from a randomized multiple-choice list. Interested programmers are invited to read a complete description of the applet at [url removed, login to view] and to try out the applet itself at [url removed, login to view] to get a feel for how it works. The final goal for this first phase would be a robust, reliable, and fully functional MIDP for PalmOS version of the current web-based Java applet. The interface, as in the applet, would need to be clear, clean, and easy to use. No web/wireless connectivity is required: both the applet and the Palm version are entirely self-contained.
