I need some help with the restructuring of the tables in my Access 2007 task tracking database. The database is a minute-by-minute tracking system designed to track how much time a person spends on a particular task, which tasks are worked during a day, and report that work the end of the week. It was designed with the help of many folks at Experts Exchange. It has admittedly had too many hands in it because I chose to dive straight in before understanding even the most fundamental of database concepts.

## Deliverables

I need some help with the restructuring of the tables in my Access 2007 task tracking database. The database is a minute-by-minute tracking system designed to track how much time a person spends on a particular task, which tasks are worked during a day, and report that work the end of the week. It was designed with the help of many folks at Experts Exchange. It has admittedly had too many hands in it because I chose to dive straight in before understanding even the most fundamental of database concepts.

So, I need a MENTOR via collaborative desktop sharing. This collaborative approach is necessary because I wish to take turns driving and make notes along the way to aid in my own understanding of database design. I have a fine renaming tool from [url removed, login to view] that helps me rename references throughout the database with one click, so this should help. I have used this tool a lot with great success but like I said; I have little knowledge of Access beyond the use of this tool.

It will take someone who can understand at least what the existing code is trying to accomplish, enough to be able to restructure the tables appropriately and re-reference things as needed. When finished, I am hoping to have the existing form, correctly attached to the newly restructured table. I am on MSN (verpit@[url removed, login to view]) or Google (tedpenner@[url removed, login to view]). Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

The current database has a superbly designed frmAddTasks pictured below. What is not superb is the design of the tables behind the form and it has become increasingly difficult to control to time add/subtract features to the database as a result.

My overall goal is to use the current form with a restructured table design as follows:

1. Each task gets opened and closed, activated and reactivated several times daily and I need to track separate date/time stamps for each. It is my understanding that some of this is ‘missing’ in the tables and some special maneuvering is made in the code to make up for this. If the table data were all there, and the query data were all there, the hope is that the add/subtract features you see on the form, will be easier to make work.

2. Additionally two (2) types of detail get tracked (one for the ‘task’ but not every task, and one for the ‘day’ but not every day).

You can get a very quick feel for this down-and-dirty database design by simply entering a task or two, and subsequently opening, closing, activating, and deactivating those tasks. This is done by clicking the check boxes on either side, and by clicking on the tasks themselves. You will also see that closing a task for instance, has the accompanied effect of deactivating it, and activating a task has the accompanying effect of deactivating the previous task. It’s fairly simple when it gets right down to it. Also try adding and subtracting time using the area under the timer to see how that currently works. Then look at the poor table design in the two topmost tables. You should then have a slightly clearer picture of how the tables could be better developed.

Here is a screenshot of the form for reference of where I HOPE to take the correctly restructured table.
