We need to incorporate weight information sent by our scale into our ASP-based shipping application. The scale sends a serial data stream through the com port upon receipt of a transmitted CR (Hex 0D) character. The data stream from the scale is 18 bytes in length.
Our website admin section has a shipping page that will need to have a field added for package weight. Next to this field will be a button "Weigh" that when clicked will cause the ASP page to send the CR character and receive the 18 byte serial data stream from the scale and enter it in the Weight field.
We will need two implementations of this functionality. The first will need to be a client-side object that will allow the scale
to be connected to the shipping PC. The second implementation will need to be a server-side object that will allow a scale to be connected to the IIS server PC and have the data returned through the IIS server com port.
Both the client-side and server-side objects will need to have properties that allow the setting of com port #, baud rate (min 300 to 19200), odd/even parity and # of start/stop bits.
Both objects should allow for a 255 character buffer, cleared when read.
Deliverables are to be both the client-side and server-side objects, and ASP pages for each with a field for Weight and a button for Weigh. We can merge the developed code into our app.
We want to be able to change the functionality from client to server-side by changing the ASP page. Client-side should utilize CMD_click(), server-side can call a processing page and return to the page with the serial data.
Ideally this will be a single VB6 COM object using MSCOMM32 functionality as long as it will work on both the client and server sides. Object programming must be done in VB.
See additional spec zip file for the specification of the data stream.
