Skills required: Matlab (data import, 3d plotting), linear algebra (tangential planes to surfaces, vector description of planes). The goal of this project is to provide a function which tells the angle at an arbitrary x,y position between the z-axis and the surface normal. For this a function in matlab should be written which returns the normal vector of a tangential plane to a surface described by 3d-data (x coordinate in mm, y coordinate in mm, z coordinate in micro meter). Input parameters for the function are arbitrary x and y positions. The data and an example script for loading the data into matlab will be provided. An additional (preperation) step is a plane correction to account for a tilting of the holder base (see picture). This surface can be assumed to be flat but it is not perfectly aligned parallel to the x,y-plane. Thus the data for the actual sample should be corrected for this imperfection by fitting a plane to the holder base altitude data.

Hi, I suppose if the function z=f(x,y) is given as table then culculations consists of the following steps: 1) Interpolate z=f(x,y) with second order surface. 2) In the given point (x,y) find the first derivatives, which determine the tangential plane. 3) Find the normal vector as (-fx', -fy', 1)/|(-fx', -fy', 1)| Thus, the only 1) may contain statistical errors while 2) and 3) are analitical formulas. The work could be done in one day and 100 euro

I have many years of experience working with Matlab. Working in robotics, I am thoroughly familiar with rigid body transformations and the like. I have access to some Matlab toolboxes, but not all. I do NOT have Simulink. If your project needs any specific toolboxes please let me know. It is strange, but from experience with a prior project I need to say this. I will not do your homework or exam for you. If this project is for a class in university, school, homework, etc., please do not ask me to do it. I am willing to help or give guidance, but will not do your work for you.
