Centos6 server issue - htaccess causes 500 internal server error

Looking for a server admin to resolve this error for me.
Everything is working fine, but as soon as I add an .htaccess file, the browser shows a 500 internal error page. I guess it is not enabled (mod_rewrite) but am not sure about it.
Resolving can be done per ssh access via teamviewer only.
