Evolving Hong Kong
Whenever I visit old friends during my sojourns to England they invariably ask me the same question. “Has Hong Kong changed since the Handover?”
I keep my answer brief. Yes it has changed, but it is still a bustling, exuberant metropolis which is remarkably orderly and relatively crime-free. Yet wasn’t it changing anyway? In fact can you think of any dynamic modern city that isn’t constantly evolving?
One of the standing jokes when I arrived in the territory 25 years ago was, “Hong Kong will be a great place to live when it is finished!” Buildings go up and others come down, roads are constructed and new schemes of reclamation are constantly being proposed. Hong Kong remains famous for having an abundance of entrepreneurs looking for their next money making scheme.
Of course I know the inference behind the question. Are Chinese soldiers on every street corner? Has the Government instigated a one child policy? Have the people any rights?
Well the slogan at the 1997 Handover was “One country, two systems” and China’s promise to leave Hong Kong’s freedoms largely unaltered for fifty years has by and large been kept.
Hong Kong is well policed, its people are mainly law abiding and it has a transparent .............
