Create an Electronics Box Design - (EBD)

In this contest, we need your help in designing a lightweight electronics box to accommodate individual electronics board, connectors, and a mechanical mounting bolt pattern.

Challenge Rules:
The prize will be awarded for the lowest mass, technically feasible design, submitted before the submission deadline.
No physical prototype is required, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design and the credibility of your mass estimate. Only complete submission packages that follow the attached Submission Guidelines will be evaluated (the Exit Survey Code must be included).

You may use any tool you choose to develop your design, but your submission must be in PDF format. If your design is selected as a winning design, upload of the design source files will be required in their native format will be required during the handover phase before the award of the prize.

So the box needs to hold 1x Arduino Mega and 2x MC 5004 P RS/CO and then the 2 dsub connectors? That's 2 of the MC 5004 (the P RS/CO version)?

    Hello,
This seems like a very simple exercise, it looks like I've come late to the party for some of the more interesting challenges. That said, I'd like to get a better feel for the environment where this box will be mounted as far as it could effect the design needs.

What is the normal temperature in the area(s) of the space station where this box will be mounted? In case of any failure of the HVAC system, what extremes in temperature should the design anticipate? Is there typically humidity, dust or other particulates that could enter through cooling (or weight saving) openings that would be detrimental to the operation of the boards?

Given the time frame that remains in this context, I will assume no need for cooling holes, but the possibility of using some for weight savings. Such features are easily added, modified or removed when your answers are provided. Thanks.

Assume a normal atmosphere at STP (70 degrees Fahrenheit, one atmosphere). However, please refer to the document for specific requirements for this challenge, which may be built upon for a follow-up challenge.

This challenge is solely focused on the mechanical aspects of this electronics control box. You do not need to design for grounding your electronics. The only design requirements are outlined in the document.

is the mounting plate 4mm thick. The hole dimension in the figure is given as 4 mm deep. Just wanted to confirm.

No, that just defines the interface plate to which you must attach too and the depth of the holes that you may use.

A small question, will the Faulhaber controller have the connector pins in the final design? Since they are used generally for prototyping and the final connections will probably be soldered, can I not consider them while noting down the dimensions of the board?

You can consider that the connector pins will be in the final design.

    Questions:

    1. Is the box supposed to be air-completely solid?
    2. Is the box to be sealed air-tight (including washers/gasket/o-ring etc as required?

    Thanks

Apologies for the typo. I meant if the box required to be completely solid aluminum or can there be cavities etc for air flow for eg?

    Questions:

    1. When the Electronics Box (EB) is mounted, are the mounting holes dedicated to it; or should they be left ‘available’ to something else, like the Astrobee arm?

    2. If the mount holes are for the EB, what fastener is used to mount it, and are those fasteners applied from above (relative to pics provided)?

    3. Is there an existing, fixed interface for the EBs circuit board connectors/pins? If so/not, how and/or by what will they be engaged?

    Thanks.

      1) The mounting holes provided are dedicated for the EB.

      2) Please review the problem document for specifics on the fasteners and holes provided.

      3) There is a fixed interface for the Glenair Connector and its position from the Astrobee, but you are to design how your CDPD connects to the RA.
