The website allows people to explore the possible genetic makeup of children that could result from two people's genetic data. This contest is just for the UI mocks for several web pages; the backend is already under development. The site will be named Yougenics, and the final format is HTML/CSS.
In general, raw genetics data is either uploaded or imported from genetic sequencing companies like 23andMe or Ancestry.com. A user can upload more than one set of genetic data; each set makes a separate profile for the same user (eg, a user could load genetic data for themselves and their partner into two profiles).
"Invite" Web Page:
The user can then invite other users to cross-breed profiles (ie, what genetic traits could a child from these two profiles have?). This will result in an email invitation to sign up to the site, if the user is not already a member. Crossing two profiles results in a new profile (representing the hypothetical child) available to both of the users who participated. It will take some time to generate the new profile (perhaps hours), so the user should be able to see the status of invitations that a user has sent, whether they have been accepted, and how far the processing has progressed.
"Review" Web Page:
Any of these profiles (whether a hypothetical child or a user's own uploaded genetic scan) can be reviewed by the user. Reviewing a profile shows a list of interesting genes, sorted by priority, with some summary information about each. There will probably be several hundred on average for each profile, in a few different categories. An example of the summary data that would be shown when reviewing a profile is at https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/yougenic/sample_report.html.
"Gene Detail" Web Page:
Specific genes can also be opened in more detail from the summary page, and will reveal more data, links to scientific publications, as well as a forum where users can discuss the gene and its effects. An example of the kind of data that the page will display is https://www.snpedia.com/index.php/Rs2240340. When looking at a detail page like this, a user should be able to see which gene each of their profiles has, eg "snpTable" at https://api.23andme.com/docs/jslib shows how 23andMe represents this.
The design should emphasize the genetic and scientific nature of this project (eg, double-helix images, etc). If a logo is used, it should be based on a genie or djinn, but again with a strong visual link to science/genetics. The background should generally be white with ample blank space, and the palette should be mostly pastels for larger areas, and limited bright colours for highlights. Individual elements in web pages should be large and easy to distinguish and read.
Some websites with similar design aesthetic: 23andme.com, genos.co, ucsfhealth.org, gene.com
